Three school radio clubs created in the high schools of El Guettar, El Ayaycha and Belkhir, 24 pupils trained, and 15 "Jil Jadid" programmes aired on children's rights and school drop-out.

Context

Gafsa governorate has worrying school drop-out rates. The initiative is part of the "Right to Education" project run by the Tunisian Mediterranean Centre (TU-MED) in partnership with the Ministry of Education, with funding from the European Union. It set out to pass on the media experience of the association and Radio Capsa FM to pupils, and to make school radio a space for dialogue and creativity attractive enough to keep them engaged at school. It also aimed to shed light on early school leaving and to involve the authorities, parents, experts and civil society in finding solutions.

Objectives

  1. 01Help reduce early school leaving by opening spaces for expression and dialogue between pupils, staff and the wider community in three high schools.
  2. 02Raise awareness among pupils and parents of the value of education and children's right to learn, and better understand the causes of drop-out.
  3. 03Train pupils in journalistic writing, public speaking and audio techniques.
  4. 04Improve the school environment by equipping schools with the tools and resources that make pupils want to get involved.
