Youth
JAMIL.Net + Employment
Between October 2023 and January 2024, Radio Capsa FM welcomed young people from the media-literacy workshops of the Gafsa and El Guettar youth centres to design and produce radio programmes with them. Over two cycles, fourteen young people co-produced four programmes on topics they chose themselves: environmental information, online fraud, information overload on social media and making positive use of one's online presence.
Context
Young people spend much of their time online, exposed to fake news, scams and information overload, often without the tools to make sense of it. The JAMIL.Net + Emploi project runs media and information literacy workshops in youth centres and cultural centres, and seeks to connect what participants learn there with the practice of community radio. Radio Capsa FM already had experience with these topics from phases 1 and 2 of the Maghreb Radio Network project, producing programmes on its own or with other Maghreb radios.
Objectives
- 01Enable young people from the media-literacy workshops to put their knowledge into practice by producing real radio programmes.
- 02Pass on the basics of radio journalism: research, running orders, hosting and interviewing.

- 04Strengthen links between the radio, youth centres and local civil society.

What changed
- Fourteen young people produced programmes on topics they chose themselves; eight of them hosted the programmes.
- With no prior journalism experience, the young people received fast-track training, pilot recordings and individual online follow-up; the radio added two visits to those planned.
- In the second cycle the radio travelled to El Guettar, extending access beyond the city of Gafsa.
- Women were well represented: 12 of the 17 people involved in the first cycle.
- The second cycle drew a larger audience than the first: 4,451 views against 3,492 in the week of release.
- The experience convinced the radio that youth centres can become a lasting partner in training a new generation of journalists in the region.
