Nakhla project participants gathered in a Gafsa oasis

Between April 2024 and July 2025, the project supported twenty young women from five Gafsa oases to become drivers of climate resilience, able to speak in public and take part in local life. Training, coaching, a study visit and the co-production of ten radio programmes: every participant completed the full journey.

Context

The Gafsa oases are among the ecosystems most exposed to climate change: water is becoming scarce, soils are degrading and traditional farming is in decline. Women play a central role in farm work and family life, yet they are rarely present where decisions are made and almost absent from the media. Nakhla started from a simple idea: a community radio can give these women the knowledge, the confidence and the channels to speak for their oases themselves.

Objectives

  1. 01Strengthen the engagement of young oasis women in sustainable development by raising their awareness of environmental and climate issues.
  2. 02Support their role in public life through a local network of engaged women.
  3. 03Build their leadership and advocacy skills through training, coaching and participatory media production.
